An Elegy for Easterly was first published in 2009. For me it caught the spirit Gappah had been writing short stories for years, tucking them away and showing no-one. But An Elegy for Easterly was shortlisted for prizes galore (think the Orwell, the LA prize, the Frank O’Connor) before swooping in to scoop the big one: the Guardian first book award.

Petina Gappah is a Zimbabwean writer whose work has appeared in Prospect, A Public Space, Per Contra, and The Zimbabwe Times, and on the website of Granta. She holds law degrees from the University of Cambridge, the University of Graz, and the University of Zimbabwe, and works in Geneva as an international trade lawyer. PETINA GAPPAH’s An Elegy for Easterly (2009) was short-listed for the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award and the Los Angeles Times Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction, and won the 2009 Guardian First Book Award. Taken individually as well as when assembled collectively, the short stories that comprise Petina Gappah's debut collection, An Elegy for Easterly, offer a powerful lament for the Zimbabwe of Gappah's childhood, a Zimbabwe that has all but disappeared behind the tragedies of totalitarianism, hyperinflation, corruption, crippling poverty, misogyny and an unchecked AIDS epidemic.
